4 Sun Valley Sun Aug 22 1991 Services held for Leo Zimmer longtime Augusta resident Augusta Leo Zimmer 89 as he posed for the Sun in his room at the Cascade County Convalesent Home in June One of his last poems was published with an article in the July 23 issue of the Sun He wrote: "I am an old man who used to be a poet but now I am old ready to quit and I know wishes from Leo Leo's wit and humor were some of his outstanding trails Leo Zimmer 89 a longtime resident of Augusta died of natural causes in a Great Falls nursing home Funeral services were held Friday at the Augusta Community Church and burial followed at the Augusta Cemetery with Rev Dave Knight officiating The organist was Francis Carter Valerie Isakson Oscar Kcnck Bud Mosher Richard Young and Richard Honorary Pallbearers Bodkins and Charles Willard The Chapel of Chimes in Great Falls handled the arrangements He was born in Augusta on Nov 23 1901 In 1929 he married Margaret Johnson who preceded him in death in 1938 During that year he obtained the Zimmer Ranch a ranch founded by his father Henry in 1913 On June 2 1940 he manied Bertha Lorentz and they raised their family while operating the ranch He loved spending time with his family working on the ranch and being a poet reciting poetry and stories He also enjoyed drama and participated in community theater His son Lewis helped him operate the ranch for four years until 1970 Zimmer retired from ranching in 1976 Zimmer was a member of the Montana Farm Bureau Montana Stockgrowcrs Association and the Republican Party He also attended the Augusta Community Church He is survived by a son Lewis of Bozeman: stepsons Dr Henry Lorentz of Great Falls and William Lorentz of Santa Cruz Calif a sister Helen Harris of Great Falls 1 1 grandchildren and four great granchildren His wife Bertha and two sisters preceded him in death Memorials are suggested to the Augusta Community Church the Augusta Ambulance Service or to the Spokane Crippled Children's Hospital AUGUSTA NEWS By Dave Knight Well the family and I are back from our vacation trip to the West Coast It was a safe and enjoyable trip In Seattle we saw the Aquarium Pike's Public Market (a fun place) the Zoo and went to the Kingdome to see the Seattle Mariners defeat the Minnesota Twins Next we saw the towns of Ilwaco and Long Beach and the Pacific Ocean From there we were off to see Mount St Helens What an awesome sight Then it was on to Portland Oregon and a visit to the zoo there We made quick trip home along the Columbia Gorge We found central Washington very dry and desolate They have more than their share of dust devils As always it is great to be back in Augusta SCHOOL DAZE Yesterday the 21st was the first day of school here in Augusta Best wishes to the Administration staff teachers and students as they begin the "91 "92 school year Where has the summer gone? FUN (D) DAY This Saturday the 24th will be a very busy day It will be a day of nmningwalking eating buying and just having a great time All of this will be to help the Augusta Volunteer Ambulance Service raise money to buy a new ambulance So come on out and help support this very worthy cause Everyone should have a great lime SORELY MISSED Last Tuesday evening Leo Zimmer passed away With his death this community has lost a very important link with our past He had a great memory about the people and events of the town of Augusta Our condolences go out to his family who meant so much to him He also meant a lot to the rest of us as well UDDER ilAPNINS Many of the area pastors decided to take their vacation at the same time and to travel It just happened this way By mid-week most will have returned and be ready to get back to work Last Sunday Millie the kids and I had been in Augusta six years It doesn't seem that long It's great to be here and the people of Augusta have been wonderful If you have anything to share about your summer let me know and III put it in this column Also I'll try to keep you posted about various school activates and happenings So keep an eye on this paper and the School's monthly News Letter so that you can be informed about what's going on at school Well here we go into another school year and schedule As we being to run around to various school activates and our jobs let's lake some lime to sit and visit with the people around us Finally thanks for the support and words of encouragement which you have given me about this column I will try to do my best Have a great week?
